Washington State Worker Memorial Day: 91 workers died in 2018
Worker Memorial Day 2018
In 2018, 91 workers lost their life in work related injuries or illnesses. Some were in their early 20s. The names, faces, and stories of some of them are available in L&I’s Worker Memorial Day program. May they rest in peace and their memory be a blessing.
Memorial Ceremony
April 25, 2019, is Washington State Worker Memorial Day. At 2:00 pm L&I will be hosting a ceremony to honor workers who passed away in the previous year from job-related injuries or illnesses. The ceremony will begin in the auditorium at the L&I Tumwater campus. The ceremony will include comments from speakers including the L&I Director, representatives from labor organizations, the Washington business community, and self-insurers. After comments from the speakers, there will be a reading of the names of the fallen workers being remembered. Later, it will be accompanied by the ringing of a bell. L&I employees will join families in the audience.
Following the indoor activities, the ceremony will continue outdoors in the Worker Memorial Garden. There, families of fallen workers are invited to ring the brass bell in memory of their loved ones. The bell is the centerpiece of the Worker Memorial Garden outside L&I headquarters. It is dedicated to all Washingtonians who have died as a result of workplace injuries or illnesses.
Please donate if you can
As stated by Governor Jay Inslee in his April 4, 2019 Proclamation, this memorial serves as an opportunity to pay tribute to fallen workers and rededicate ourselves to workplace safety and health. In honor of the 91 workers who died in 2018, Reck Law, PLLC will be making a donation to Kids Chance of Washington, an organization that provides educational scholarships to the families of injured workers. If you can, we encourage everyone to donate as well.
